The painting is a reference to the work of Aivazovsky brig Mercury, an 18-gun military brig of the Russian Navy. It was laid in Sevastopol on January 28 (February 9), 1819 and launched on May 7 (19), 1820. In May 1829, during the Russo-Turkish War (1828-1829), the brig under the command of Lieutenant Commander Alexander Ivanovich Kazarsky won an unequal battle with two Turkish linear ships, immortalizing his name.
