The phrase “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” was written on the wall of his house in 1991 by his girlfriend Kathleen Hanna, a member of the punk rock band Bikini Kill. Because Kurt was discussing anarchy, punk rock, etc. with Kathleen at the time, he interpreted this phrase as “Kurt smells like young people” and decided to use it in the title of a new song.
