The painting shows William Seward Burrows and his wife; Joan Vollmer in Mexico. On September 6, 1951, at the height of one of the many parties, Burrows suddenly announced to the guests that he would shoot Wilhelm Tell style pistol. Joan immediately put a glass on her head. William, in a state of permanent alcohol intoxication, fired a fatal shot and killed her without hitting the target.
