The diptych expresses the experience of a hypnagogic jerk, a state in which, during the rapid phase of sleep, a person creates a feeling of flying, sudden movement, or collision. This phenomenon can be manifested by sleep paralysis, sudden fear, muscle contraction, feeling like someone is looking at you, and many other ways. The time between a restful sleep and a hypnagogic jerk can be negligible minutes. It is this contrast that is conveyed in the diptych.
