Watercolor technique began to develop in China after the invention of paper in the 2nd century AD. In the 12th—13th centuries, paper became widespread in Europe, primarily in Spain and Italy. In medieval miniatures, watercolor paints were used corpusally — with white coverts. Transparent watercolor paints began to be used only in the 15th—16th centuries, but the labor of following the correct technique prevented watercolor painting from being compared to tempera or oil painting for a long time.
