In Belarus, this day was celebrated as the holiday of Komoeditsa. The housewives baked pancakes and were the first to bring them to the stump (coma) to feed the bear, the main spirit of the forest, who woke up from hibernation. Rumor has it that this is how the stable expression “the first pancake is lumpy” appeared. They also prepared “comas” from peas. A kind of porridge with lumps.
“Komoeditsa”, as a holiday, was recorded only in Dokshitsky district. But I remember very well the “comas” that my grandmother prepared in the Mogilev region. The truth is made from potatoes.
This holiday is embedded in me like the internal code of my ancestors. And the diptych is really about waking up.
