In 1904, the construction of the Krugbaikal Railway, the Golden Buckle of the Russian Steel Belt, was completed, which closed the western and eastern sections of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which stretches for 9,000 km from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok. It was named golden because of the extremely high cost of construction. A large number of bridges, retaining walls and 39 tunnels were built along the 74-kilometer section of the route. All work was mostly done by hand. Currently, bypass routes have been built and Krugbaikalka has become a tourist route from Port Baikal to Slyudyanka station.
