Jan van Eyck, along with Rogier van der Weyden, is considered one of the main founders of oil painting. Its extremely reliable method, in which many transparent coatings were applied to each other and his attention to detail gave an unusually realistic representation for the time. It started a new phase in Western European painting. His portrait of a man in a red turban is one of the earliest examples.
