This work was inspired by the painting of a bowl that is kept in the Medal Office in Paris. The plot was the struggle between Peleus and Thetis. Overtaken by a passion for the beautiful Nereide, Peleus overtook her on the seashore and, after a long struggle, during which Thetis turned into a snake, a lion, fire, and water, took possession of her. Thetis was defeated, and now she was to become Peleus' wife. The lines of the pattern are precise and elegant, and the silhouette composition is impeccable. The movement and dynamism of the struggle. The strict style of the image is enlivened by the ornamental design, which imparts the decorative elegance of the entire composition.
