This work was inspired by the image on the red-figured kilic, which is kept at the Museum of Ancient Applied Arts in Munich. The theme here is the myth of the battle between Pyrithian king Pyrithos and centaur Eurythion, who is trying to kidnap Pyrithaus' bride, beautiful Hippodamia, at the time of the wedding. The moment is captured when Lapitha puts his foot on the defeated centaur, as a sign of victory, and shakes his spear and shield over the centaur's open body, his beloved Hippodamia is saved. The lines of the Lapiff and Centaur figures repeat the roundness of the circle, bringing the image and its picturesque decor into harmony.
