This work was inspired by the image on a terracotta amphora kept at the Metropolitan Museums in New York. The angle in which the musician is depicted conveys an amazing effect of dynamic movement: Aed marches, accompanying himself on his kithara, singing an epic song. The exquisite ornamental palmette frieze at the base of the work emphasizes the harmonious form and elegant proportions of the composition.
