A grebe can stay underwater looking for food for up to 65 seconds. This is a record number among waterfowl in our country. Grebes do not fly often - mostly only for necessary flights (for the winter and back to the right body of water). The grebe spends the rest of its life on and under water.
One of the main anthropogenic factors in the death of waterfowl is fishing gear and accessories, and fishing debris left behind. Birds get entangled in fishing lines, nets, swallow hooks, after which they are unable to swim, hunt, move normally, or immediately die.
